St. Andrews Center kicked-off the first in a new series of cultural programs celebrating Chattanooga's diverse Latino communities, Sunday, July 25. The Latino Arts Project identifies and promotes Hispanic traditional folk arts. The only event of its kind in Chattanooga, the Latino Arts Project will present free monthly arts programming for children and adults, including live Latin music, cooking demonstrations, storytelling, and theatre productions. All events and performances are free and open to all communities. Children are welcome to attend. During the July 25th kick-off event, visitors enjoyed an afternoon of lively Puerto Rican rhythms, ice-cold agues frescas, and delicious tres leches cake. Other events included a demonstration from Chattanooga's newly formed Latino-based textile group. This group also showcased hand-made, needle-craft items, including table pieces, pillow-cases, blankets, clothing, and hair-ties. "This is a great awareness event and celebration for the Latino communities and community at-large," said Liza Blair, Latino Arts Project Director. "Chattanooga is home to many talented and gifted Hispanic artisans and craftsmen; an extremely dedicated group of individuals who are highly skilled and experts in their craft." Double Your Dollars with GOS!A long-time supporter of St. Andrews Center, the Maclellan Foundation has recently challenged us to broaden our donor base. Between October 2009 and 2010, the Maclellan Foundation will match every dollar raised by St. Andrews Center for general operating support (GOS), up to $25,000. Any donation received between now and October not specifically targeted toward a program or project will count in this matching grant. Please help us make the most of this opportunity. While funding is always a need, broadening our base of support is equally important to our long-term success. This challenge grant allows us to specifically address this issue. We are excited about how this will work and look forward to hearing from many more of you! Every donation you make will be doubled in effect! To help us track donations for required reporting purposes, please indicate "GOS" on your check. |
